Consumer Product Design

This award covers product designs for markets such as domestic products, sports and leisure goods, electronic products, fashion accessories, medical and pharmaceutical devices and consumer packaging. Entries are encouraged from product designers and design engineers at consultancies, processors and end-use companies.

The judges will be looking at areas such as ergonomics, aesthetics, speed to market and materials selection. Apprentice or Trainee of the Year

Entry deadline was 30th April for this category. Entry now closed for this category.

This category is open to all companies in the industry - suppliers, processors, OEMs - who have apprentices or trainees and to academic establishments.

In its’ role as a Trade Association for Plastics Machinery companies, PMMDA encourages Members to play an important part in developing the skills of young people within the industry. The Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Award will be sponsored by Krauss Maffei this year, and once again the PMMDA has donated a prize of £1000 to be awarded to the winning finalist.             E-mail: pmmda@pmmda.org.uk  Website: www.pmmda.org.uk

The judges will be looking for measurable results in areas such as academic achievements, skills development and overall performance in the workplace. Each person must be entered by his or her training establishment or company. Finalists will be notified by 1st May.

All finalists in this category will be interviewed by the judges and should be accompanied by their mentor or supervisor. Interviews will take place at PDM 2010 Exhibition in Telford, 18th-20th May, www.pdmevent.com  Further details will be confirmed on notification to finalists. A winner will be chosen from these interviews.

Best Technology Application

This award recognises companies that have instigated, developed or applied innovative technologies. It is open to organisations or companies which can demonstrate how they have gained tangible benefits through genuine plastics materials or processing innovations.

The judges will be looking for quantifiable benefits in areas such as production efficiency, quality standards, product performance or profitability.

Best Environmental or Energy Efficiency Programme

This award recognises companies that have made a significant improvement in their environmental performance and/or energy efficiency.

The judges are looking for specific programmes that have led to real measurable benefits. Examples could include scrap reduction, recycling schemes, energy saving programmes, community initiatives or designing for the environment.

Best Training and Development Programme

This award is open to companies which view the development of skills in their staff as an integral part of their own development.

The judges will be looking for investment in training, examples of effectiveness and good appraisal and personal development programmes.

Best Business Initiative

This award is open to processors (manufacturers of components or finished products using plastics materials) which can demonstrate real business growth through a range of enterprising initiatives.

For example, these could include new business development, export growth, entering new markets, customer care initiatives, quality programmes, innovative marketing strategies, taking advantage of external help and advice, implementing management/planning software, improving supply chain management and so on.

Processor of the Year

This award is open to processors (manufacturers of finished components and products using plastics materials) and OEMs processing in-house which are able to demonstrate to the judges their overall excellence. Entry into at least one other category is expected in addition to entering this overall category, as it would give the judges an opportunity to understand more about the company’s areas of excellence.

The judges will be looking for leading performances across a number of areas, which could include business enterprise and growth, technical innovation, people development, manufacturing efficiency, customer relations or addressing environmental concerns. In other words, the company needs to be an all-round world-class processor. Following entry into this category, all finalists will be visited by a judge, who will prepare a supplementary report for the judging panel.

Supplier Partnership - Prime Machinery

The Supplier Categories will cease to be a voting system from 2010 and will become an entry format. The entries will be judged by a panel of independent industry experts, who will select finalists and then a winner.

Entry examples for Prime Machinery supplier - working on customer project to find solutions through use of two-shot machine; installing a cost-effective new machine as a replacement for long-standing customer.

A company wishing to be considered for this category:

* Must write a 400 word submission on the entry form concerning one project with a customer, or an ongoing relationship with one customer, in which it can show demonstrable benefits to that customer.
* Must provide information in the entry that details those benefits to the customer.
